Strategy from Collective Forethought How the European chemical industry collectively looked at scenarios for its future By Klaus Heinzelbecker and Adrian Taylor Abstract: The chemical industry, for a long time a leading light of European manufacturing capacity, is now facing challenges that put its competitiveness at risk. This article describes the initiative of the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) to help its members rise to the occasion.
Futuring in the European Chemical Industry Dr. Klaus Heinzelbecker Article as published in the Journal of Business Chemistry, January 2005 With the beginning of the new millennium there seems to be growing interest in foresight and futures studies. Scenarios 2010 Project
- Phase 1 of the project published in 2000 contains a ten year horizon scenario of the chemical industry with on overlay of the macro economy. Whilst the assumptions have been influenced by Sept 11th 2001 and the subsequent financial market turmoil, this is not turning the scenarios upside down, but more likely affecting the balance of probability and the timing.
- Phase 2 of the project involved a deep dive into the principal segments of the chemicals industry and in particular looking at the likely differences between bulk chemicals and specialities.
- Phase 3 of the project is a benchmarking project on Innovation. This is being jointly designed by ECMSA and Roland Berger Consultants. The project was reported at the 2002 ECMSA Strategy and Marketing Conference held in Barcelona on 28th - 29th November 2002. Papers available on request
