Fusing the Automotive and Chemical Value Chains
Strategy Workshop, 22 September 2010 - Frankfurt, Germany

In conjunction with Roland Berger, ECMSA has conducted a study entitled “Fusing Automotive and Chemical Value Chains”. A snapshot of the Study was already presented by Thorsten Ploss, Partner at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, last year October in Brussels.

With 5% of the EU’s chemicals consumed by the automotive sector in Europe plus a significant export share, European chemicals producers clearly have a material interest in a strong automotive industry. This, in turn, relies on the chemical industry as a crucial supplier that plays a key role in helping OEMs to meet consumer demand for smaller, lighter vehicles, that deliver lower emissions and better fuel economy as well increasing comfort and security levels.

In light of the global recession, now more than ever the automotive and chemical industries must work together to achieve their business objectives. However, the business leaders’ perspectives from each of these two industries’ are often at odds. There is strong evidence that automotive OEMs and chemical companies work in isolation, instead of identifying, understanding and finding solutions to the structural problems within their value
chain. OEMs are struggling to remain profitable, causing many chemical companies' automotive margins to be unreliable. As a result, chemical companies are reluctant to invest in automotive chemicals and consider it to be a market with limited potential.

Fusing the value chains
An innovative, four-step strategy to enhance cooperation and ultimately fuse the value chains of these two industries, could build a mutually beneficial future.

This involves:
I. OEM Inclusion: Regular, direct contact of individual chemical companies and OEMs on a technical and more importantly senior management level
II. Strategic Focus: Open communication on long-term strategic objectives between the two sectors
III. Business Case Driven: Joint development of a viable business case to justify the development of new,
automotive-specific chemical products
IV. Value Chain Fusion: The ultimate goal.

This workshop will initiate the implementation of the new level of co-operation between automotive and chemicals industry by validation goals, identifying pilot areas and identify required activities, risks and their mitigation.

Who is going to be the next Rockefeller?
“How the chemicals industry can benefit in working with new energy players in batteries, bio fuels and solar cells”
Strategy Workshop, 21 & 22 October 2010 - Brussels, Belgium
In conjunction with A.T. Kearney, ECMSA is conducting a study on selected areas of the clean technology industry. A status update on the Study was presented by Ingo Schröter, Principal at A.T. Kearney, at the Networking Dinner with Strategic Project Presentations following ECMSA’s Annual General Meeting on 27 October 2009 at the Brussels Marriott Hotel.

General interest in the Study has been extremely positive thus far. In December 2009, the interview process was completed, after which the Study will be finalised and feedback will be given to all participants. Afterwards, A.T. Kearney, in conjunction with ECMSA, will prepare for the marketing of the Study, as well as the organisation of events, such as ECMSA-Member workshops, based on the Study Report to be pursued in 20&21 October 2010 in Brussels. Within the aforementioned workshops, Study participants are invited to discuss jointly the findings and to share thoughts on how to tackle the opportunities of new energy supply.

16 & 17 November - Sustainability: What are the growth opportunities for chemical companies?
Sustainability has been one of the strongest mega-trends for the past 10 years. Evolving from production and safety related issues, this trend has moved to an end-market driven phenomenon and most recently to consumer behavior changes. In the meantime, increasing oil demand and limited supply has pushed government and industries to find alternative energy and raw material sources, such as industrial biotechnologies. These changes are observed in all segments, from construction to automotive to FMCGs. Now is the time for those more flexible chemical manufacturing organizations to rise to the challenge.
