In conjunction with Roland Berger, ECMSA has conducted a study entitled “Fusing Automotive and Chemical Value Chains”. A snapshot of the Study was already presented by Thorsten Ploss, Partner at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, last year October in Brussels.
With 5% of the EU’s chemicals consumed by the automotive sector in Europe plus a significant export share, European chemicals producers clearly have a material interest in a strong automotive industry. This, in turn, relies on the chemical industry as a crucial supplier that plays a key role in helping OEMs to meet consumer demand for smaller, lighter vehicles, that deliver lower emissions and better fuel economy as well increasing comfort and security levels.
In light of the global recession, now more than ever the automotive and chemical industries must work together to achieve their business objectives. However, the business leaders’ perspectives from each of these two industries’ are often at odds. There is strong evidence that automotive OEMs and chemical companies work in isolation, instead of identifying, understanding and finding solutions to the structural problems within their value chain. OEMs are struggling to remain profitable, causing many chemical companies' automotive margins to be unreliable. As a result, chemical companies are reluctant to invest in automotive chemicals and consider it to be a market with limited potential.
Fusing the value chains An innovative, four-step strategy to enhance cooperation and ultimately fuse the value chains of these two industries, could build a mutually beneficial future.
This involves: I. OEM Inclusion: Regular, direct contact of individual chemical companies and OEMs on a technical and more importantly senior management level II. Strategic Focus: Open communication on long-term strategic objectives between the two sectors III. Business Case Driven: Joint development of a viable business case to justify the development of new, automotive-specific chemical products IV. Value Chain Fusion: The ultimate goal.
This workshop will initiate the implementation of the new level of co-operation between automotive and chemicals industry by validation goals, identifying pilot areas and identify required activities, risks and their mitigation.
